THE B TEAM MEMBERS: NURTURE THEM

A company is like a small cosmos, a small community with diversity at its core, its strength. In the company, you will have leaders and followers, A players and B players, The risk-takers and the safe zone guys. In this blog, we look at how to nurture the talent of “B” players, who remain unsung and undervalued. We look at some ways to tap their potential so that they grow as people and the company benefits from their contribution.

Here are some ways to nurture the potential of “B players” in your organization: 

  • Appreciate their individual personalities. Get to know each and everyone in your department/company. Spend time and bond with the employees. Learn about their personalities, preferences, and perspectives. Don’t ignore anyone irrespective of their personality and rank. 

  • Make sure that each person is the right fit for the job. Each person has certain skill sets and the company must help each person to do the profile/job they are happy doing and equipped to do so. This way they will thrive and so will the company. So, if someone is an introvert, don’t pressurise them to give presentations. If someone is bored of sitting through endless meetings, assign them other tasks which they excel at or enjoy doing.  

  • All are equal. Look inward or into the company’s “informal culture” where biases may have crept in. Women and certain sections such as LGBT, lower castes are overlooked for certain tough and important profiles, assignments and promotions. Ensure a level playing field where all are given equal weightage.  

  • Be the “wind beneath their wings”. Mentor and encourage the “B” team members who could do with the support and nurturing. Create a culture and ambience of support for newcomers and “B” type personalities/team members.  Let them achieve their potential which will benefit the company in the long run. The power lies within all of us, some just need the extra “ hand-holding “ to get running the marathon.  

 We all need to recognize that not every person is a star and not everyone in the company will be a rock star / A player. The sooner we deal with it, the better will be the company culture in forging a spirit of mentorship and obtaining the best of each and every one.
