GRATITUDE AT OFFICE

“I think gratitude is a big thing. It puts you in a place where you’re humble.” – Quote by Andra Day.

Gratitude may only have nine letters in it but it is a word that is weighted and with such depth in it.  Every one of us needs to have a sense of gratitude about the small things and big things in life that have. More than often all of us forget about being grateful for our blessed lives and all the small mercies & fortunes that have placed us in a better position than others around us. Expressing gratitude is acknowledging that we have been blessed with things like health, family, jobs, fresh air, sunshine, water, and freedom. Writing a gratitude journal like I do every once in a while is a great way to express and acknowledge the same. Note down 5 things for which you are grateful. This sense of gratitude that we exhibit needs to be carried forward in our professional lives. Let us see how.

Be grateful for having a job, colleagues to bond and support you, the people who make each day a happy, relaxed, easy workday for you. You could be grateful for having a dedicated parking space near / in your office complex. There are so many things to be thankful for. Like I am thankful for having a desk near a window, where the sun streams down onto my desk and I can see the birds swirling around the buildings that make up the office I work in North Delhi. If you put your mind to it and start jotting it down, you will find many reasons for being thankful in office.

After acknowledging the feeling, express it – through words (verbal or written) or actions. A simple thank you expressed heartfelt warms the heart. You could express with it a handwritten note, a greeting card, or an email. Always write in the text the reason(s) for gratitude so that the recipient knows the reason for the thank you. It could be as simple as saying that “your smile uplifted me on a bad day” , “thanks for your words of encouragement and support when I was down” , “I am grateful for your feedback on XYZ, etc “. If you are a manager / leader in your brand, it’s important to acknowledge each person who reports to you. Make them feel appreciated and promote a culture of gratitude in the company.

By creating a culture of gratitude in the office, you are laying the grounds of a content, serene, and fulfilled team. You could start office/team meetings with a “ check in ” from each one about something they are thankful/grateful in the office. A notice board is a great place for employees to put up their messages. You could start a “thanksgiving” day in the office, every month.
