EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE & COPING WITH COVID FATIGUE

Publish date:

As the world is beleaguered by Covid 19 pandemic, especially India with its devastating impact of the 2nd wave, people are finding different mediums and ways to survive and be strong. In this blog, we talk about survival tools within us that help in managing and even emerging stronger at the end of the day.

Here are the ways emotional intelligence helps with covid fatigue:

  1. Self-awareness on knowing what one can control and one can’t. In the world, there are things we can’t control and things we can. Instead of fretting and fuming over the ones we can’t, people with emotional intelligence use the time and energy to focus on the things they can control. For example, they are not worried/freaked/stressed over issues like shortage of foodstuff or government policies, they channelize their energy on taking care of themselves, their loved ones, and their communities. They harness the power of one to do well.

  2. Self-awareness on their anxiety levels and triggers. People with good emotional intelligence know what makes them upset/angry / stress or unhappy, and take positive action. For example, if they don’t like driving, then opt for car ride options. If they don’t like going to supermarkets or malls, then they opt for the home delivery options via apps or stores. People know themselves and take remedial action to further stress in already stressful situations.

  3. Virtual villages to seek emotional/spiritual support. Physical distancing does not have to mean social isolation or distancing. People can turn to tech like video sharing tools and cell phones to remain connected, be social and meet up although virtually. Emotionally intelligent each out for assistance because they are self–aware and don’t have any egos about initiating the outreach. They get in touch with loved ones on a regular basis even if the others don’t.  Hugs and kisses are irreplaceable, but till we get to that stage in our lives, virtual meets and video calls are what we have to get us through with our sanity.

  4. Have future goals in mind to keep you channelized and positive. People with a goal/aim have better coping skills than others. Having something to do or visit or indulge yourself post covid keeps many positive, focussed, and better equipped to cope mentally and emotionally. Look forward to something. It could be a holiday in Palampur, a meet with an aunt in Ferozpur, a horse riding trip in Bangalore, or a visit to a museum in Madras.

  5. Ask yourself how you will look back on these covid years down the road. Visualize yourself reflecting on these times a number of years down the road. It will put things in perspective, give you a new vision and even realize that these dark times will come to an end, and the sun will shine bright again. Emotionally intelligent people are finding ways to keep their sanity alive. It could be with exercise, hobbies, learning new dishes, staying connected, volunteering, etc. Thrive or wilt, it’s in your hand. Which one do you choose?
