Work from home is not for all

REMOTE WORKING IS HARD ON YOUNG PEOPLE

Publish date:

The Covid-19 pandemic by the novel coronavirus has forced the shuttering of offices and sent mostly everyone to “work from home” be it in the city of their choosing or hometowns with family for a variety of reasons. It seems that instead of the younger demographic being comfortable and more at ease with the WFH situation, it is the senior lot of corporate employees who are the happiest. This is because they may have comorbidities or elderly relatives, they don’t feel the need to come to work to network or face the many commuting hassles.

The young people though most ease at remote working and using different tech tools to get by each day are the hardest hit. There being at remote locations means they are deprived of valuable daily learnings, mentorship from the seniors in the organisation, networking, and camaraderie, etc. Many in India were/are stuck in small apartments with their housemates especially during lockdowns which took a toll on their mental well-being. Many had to move home to be with their families and faced adjustment problems after being “free birds'' for years, on their own, in different cities from their hometowns.

Clash of culture, loss of freedom, confinement to smaller places all take a toll, but it’s been harder for the younger population who have tasted freedom, and are now adjusting to being back with folks or living in cramped co-sharing apartments with others. The anxiety and stress levels of young executives are on the high and companies who had opened helplines for their employees to validate the same theory. Unfortunately, there is not much can do for most people in such situations, it’s their domestic arrangements which are beyond the scope of companies.

In some situations, offices are reopened with smaller numbers, the youngsters are acing their game and bringing in fresh ideas & perspectives. The companies need to invest and nurture the future of the company – the young human resources. Ms. Neetu Singh, HR Manager of Codleo Consulting says “Our team of young employees were eager to get back to the corporate feel of working from an office, and morale, as well as productivity, is high now that we are back to full strength”.

Create an atmosphere of support and mental wellness for all and keep the spirit alive.
