Schedule learning hours

“Those people who develop the ability to continuously acquire new and better forms of knowledge that they can apply to their work and to their lives will be the movers and shakers in our society for the indefinite future.” – Quote by Brain Tracy, Canadian-American motivational public speaker and self-development author.

Employee development is defined as a process where an employee with the backing of his/her employer joins or participates in different training programs to further his/her skills and obtain novel knowledge and skills. In this fast paced age, at a time when everyone is running helter skelter all day especially with those working at home, looking after young children or elderly relatives, time is in short supply. Is it possible on this day to encourage or promote employee development by companies? In this blog, we look at ways companies can make learning a part and parcel of their employee’s lives.

Here are some ways to achieve employee development:

  • Revisit current training programs. If the company is already providing training /skilling programs or sessions to its employees, then it’s always good to revisit them from time to time. Assessment always leads to improvement. Are the programs still relevant?  How long should the duration of these programs be and who should attend? Should part of the program be removed or altered? Get feedback from the employees on what they like to learn to enable personalised training modules that are more relevant for each person concerned.  Don’t force training if employees are under pressure or overburdened. Be empathetic.

  • Learning during work – Another good way to encourage learning is to incorporate it during the course of the day and work.  This means while at work individuals can gain access to training and educational material as needed (for example online learning platform). This tactic makes learning directly relevant to getting the job done at the moment.

  •  Schedule learning time – Many companies are scheduling fixed time for the learning & education of their employees. It could be on a daily or weekly basis. It could take the form of an hour a day when all work stops and employees spend the time on courses or diplomas or certifications as required staying relevant and an asset to the company.

  • Lead by example - As company owner/leader/manager, be in learning mode yourself. Then talk about it to others in meetings or town halls by citing your example, and how it's helped you. Motivate others and be an inspiration for others. Leaders lead by example and this applies here as well.

Employee development is a win-win for both parties. It takes two to tango and makes it a success. Let the companies take a lead and create the right atmosphere and spirit of learning. You won’t regret it? It will only benefit the company in the long run as well as its financial bottom lines.
