Seek upskilling opportunities

Publish date:

“Wisdom is not a product of schooling but of the lifelong attempt to acquire it.” – Quote by Late Albert Einstein.

Whether you are Rajiv in school in Delhi, Umang in college in Palampur or Ravinder at work in Ludhiana, do remember, once a student, always a student. Learning is a continuous journey till the day one dies from the time one is born. Just to be clear at the very outset, Learning can be academic, or it can be about life’s lessons in general, upskilling is more specific and has to do with the technical skill sets required to be employable in an organisation. Some forget that learning & upskilling is a lifelong process, to stay relevant, keep the neurons in the brain buzzing all the time, and feeling good about yourself at the end of the day.

You can indulge in upskilling in your personal capacity in your own time with your own expenses or you can be a part of a program instituted by your company as means to retain talent that they feel it’s worth retaining. For those who wish to upskill for personal & career development, there are now many avenues. One of them is Codleo Foundation where deserving Indians can avail themselves the opportunity to learn about Salesforce CRM (the most popular and growing CRM in the world) as well as the digital market, both of which offer tremendous scope in the near future. Other avenues include joining academies / colleges offering courses part time or full time or taking online courses which are now easily available.

People need to realise the importance of up-skilling for their professional growth and the future of their families. In a country like India where each post is being claimed by thousands at the drop of a heartbeat, being replaced or redundant is now a big reality. The only way to be retained is to upskill to more “in demand” posts/profiles whereas yours might be fading over time. If you don’t upskill, be prepared to have the ‘sword of Damocles’ hanging over your head.  As you age, the threat of losing jobs is greater and finding new employment harder, upskilling is the way out for all.

For upskilling, start your research on the profiles and jobs which are “in demand” as well as where you would like to move to or see yourself in. Once done, then start looking at the courses which will help you get to this goal. Everything needs to be done slowly & steadily in a methodical manner. But it can be done. You are never too old to learn or upskill. One famous example of up-skilling is Mr. Walt Disney, owner of Walt Disney productions who began his career as a newspaper editor and switched to building an entertainment empire.

With humility and the right attitude, upskilling and learning will be your closest companions on the journey of life. Embrace them with open arms.
